Position Title: Engineer II - Roadway

Position Description: Engineer II- Roadway for Public Works involves advanced engineering work in the preparation and execution of plans, designs, permitting and specifications for construction and rehabilitation of roadway projects. Duties may include the managing and coordinating of design consultants with respect to preparing plans and specifications for roadway, bridge and roadway related drainage projects. Provides coordination and management assistance during construction of these projects.

Essential Job Functions: Manages and supervises the preparation of in-house designs, and specifications for construction and maintenance of roadway, bridge, and roadway related drainage projects. Manages, coordinates, and reviews engineering consultant's design, plans, and specifications for construction projects. Assists in the preparation and obtaining of all required regulatory agency permits. Manages and supervises the construction and inspection of roadway, bridge, drainage, and pavement rehabilitation projects. Prepares project status reports and schedules as required. Prepares quantity take-offs, cost estimates, and technical reports. Makes engineering investigations and prepares reports on findings. Provides technical assistance to in-house construction and maintenance crews and other departments. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles of civil engineering.

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of road, bridge roadway related drainage and construction.

  • Ability to read and interpret moderately complex engineering plans.

  • Ability to prepare and submit clear, and precise engineering and related reports orally and written.

  • Ability to plan, direct, and supervise the work of engineers, contractors, technicians and clerical personnel.

  • Ability to work with the public.

  • Knowledge of Florida Department of Transportation standards, specifications, and indexes.

  • Public speaking and ability to deal with the public, contractors, FDOT, Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), County employees and elected officials. Knowledge of SWFWMD rules preferred.

  • Project management experience for highway construction is preferred.

  • Ability to review engineering computations.

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, aerial photos and maps.

  • Ability to compile data and statistics.

  • Ability to operate a computer, calculator and related equipment.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Three (3) years' of experience directly related to the field of engineering to which the position is assigned.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Florida or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Applicants that are not registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Florida may apply, but would be considered for a Technical Specialist II position at $61,744.00 - $92,661.00 Annually (D.O.Q.).

Salary Information: $75,087.00 - $112,630.00 Annually
