Position Title: Treatment Facility Operator I (Wastewater)- Public Works & Engineering/Treatment Division

Position Description: Highly responsible technical work involving the efficient operation of the City’s Municipal Treatment facilities. Work involves operation of pumps, switchgear, and related equipment, performing required repairs, and the monitoring and recording of Treatment Facility Operations.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Treatment Facility Superintendent with independent judgment allowed in the operation of the treatment facilities. Work is evaluated based upon review of oral and written reports, the efficient operation of the treatment facility, attendance, safety, cooperation, performance of other job duties, and supervision of assigned personnel.

Supervisory Responsibility: As assigned

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the safe, efficient, and proper operation of the City’s treatment facilities and the other Division facilities.

  • Operates pumps, switchgear, and related equipment.

  • Maintains assigned equipment, performs required repair and preventive maintenance work as required; initiates corrective procedures for repairs as needed.

  • Review work assignments to ensure compliance with safety procedures.

  • System monitoring and sample collection.

  • Reads and records flow meters, pressure and level gauges.

  • Responds to callouts.

  • Performs routine laboratory tests on samples.

  • Ability to adjust / operate new system function/technologies.

  • Coordinate and monitor contractor’s activities as they relate to testing and quality.

  • Performs maintenance and custodial duties to buildings and grounds as necessary.

  • Responds to customer’s complaints.

  • Performs job duties in compliance with applicable safety standards.

  • May be required to do shift and holiday work.

  • Prepares and maintains records, reports, and daily logs as required following the operation manuals, permit requirements and other established procedures.

  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance to buildings, facilities, and grounds.

  • Safely operates backhoe-loader, forklift or other related types of equipment.

  • Performs other job-related duties as required by the Treatment Facility Superintendent.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:

  • Full-time/Regular position.

  • Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day or four (4) days of ten (10) hours per day. The work day may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.

  • Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

  • The City of Homestead is an in-person employer.

  • Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:

  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and must comply with the Drug-Free Workplace policy.

  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorization.

Position Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in Facility operations.

  • Must be able to climb and perform work on heights.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces.

  • Possession of a valid Florida State Department of Environmental Protection Treatment Facility Operator’s C License in wastewater is required. The nature of the job requires occasional physical exertion under varying weather conditions.

  • Must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions and ability to produce reports as required upon request.

  • Ability to supervise and train assigned personnel.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Must pass a background screening process.

Salary Information: $27.13 - $28.48 hourly
