Position Description: This is highly responsible supervisory and technical inspection work in the County's Public Works Department.

An employee assigned to this classification supervises Construction Inspectors and/or Engineering Technicians and ensures all County roads and structures adjacent to County roads adhere to required standards and specifications.

Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation.

Examples of Duties:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

  • Exudes a positive customer service focus.

  • Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.

  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of subordinate employees including determining work procedures and schedules; issuing instructions and assigning duties; reviewing work; recommending personnel actions; conducting performance reviews; and conducting departmental training and orientation.

  • Inspects all County Road construction projects; private sector road construction projects, site development and driveway and drainage connection construction; and all structures constructed adjacent to County roads for adherence to laws, rules, and regulations, permit conditions and established standards and specifications in both construction methods and techniques applied and materials and equipment used.

  • Serves as liaison with utility company representatives.

  • Issues utility construction permits; conducts subsequent on-site inspections.

  • Reviews road construction design plans for proper and accepted construction parameters.

  • Documents all inspections through forms and reports.

  • Administers construction contracts.

  • Communicates orally and in writing to contractors, engineers, and the public on a daily basis.

  • Prepares contract documents for County Road construction projects.

  • Reviews street lighting requests and makes recommendations regarding same.

  • Drives a County and/or personal vehicle to perform required duties.

  • Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to road and road-adjacent construction.

  • Thorough knowledge of current techniques, procedures, standards and specifications of road and related construction; thorough knowledge of all materials and equipment utilized.

  • Knowledge of County Road network and geographic and geologic peculiarities.

  • Ability to effectively inspect road and related construction; to apply standards and specifications fairly and consistently.

  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with private builders, other County employees, and the public.

  • Ability to complete forms and write reports.

  • Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinate employees.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.

Position Requirements: Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, public works engineering, or a closely related field and two years road construction and inspection experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Applicants within six months of meeting the minimum education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.

A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.

Salary Information: $65,956.80 - $92,976.00 Annually. Salary Negotiable Depending on Qualifications
